Montana de Tindaya

Montana de Tindaya (35649 Tindaya, La Oliva) – located toward the north end of the island, this is a favored eco-tourist destination. This volcano rises to about 400 meters above sea level. Since it is classified by the local authorities as a natural monument, it is protected by special laws.

In order to be allowed to hike to Montana de Tindaya, you are required to ask for a permit from the Cabildo – Consejería de Medio Ambiente del Cabildo. You can request this permit from the offices in Puerto del Rosario and Carralejo. Due to its location, Montana de Tindaya is visible from many parts of the island. Malpaís de la Arena

Malpais de la Arena (Calle Montaña de la Arena, 74, 35640 La Oliva) – this natural park exists thanks to the last volcanic eruption that occurred on the island 10,000 years ago. Within this area is La Arena Volcano, which is about 420 meters high and is the highest point of this park (making this a natural eco-tourist destination). It has the largest population of Canarian tarabilla (a small bird that’s indigenous to the island), and unique plants like tabaibas and lichen can also be found here.

Jandía

Jandía – this is a peninsula in the southwestern part of the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. The peninsula is entirely in the municipality of Pájara. Within the peninsula is Fuerteventura’s tallest mountain, Pico de Jandía or Pico de la Zarza, that rises to an elevation of 807 meters. Jandía has gotten some notoriety in recent times, when a German engineer Gustav Winter leased it from the Franco regime in the late 1930s, declared it an off-limited military zone, and built a shadowy villa on the premises.

Aside from that, travelers can venture to nearby Morro Jable beach (one of the better beaches on the island), and visit the local town of the same name. The town has the feel of a local Spanish town — with restaurants and cafes catering to Canarian locals rather than international tastes. To no surprise, some resorts (like those run by Sol Meliá and Occidental) are present in the Jandia beach areas.

La Isla de Lobos

Isla de Lobos – this islet (whose name means “Island of Wolves” in Spanish – named after the sea wolves, or monk seals, that once lived there), is located just north of Fuerteventura. It comprises a largely uninhabited nature preserve that’s home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare birds. The main beach, Playa de la Concha, is known for its clear waters. Trails cross a landscape of salt marshes and hornitos (small volcanic mounds) and lead to volcanic Montaña La Caldera and the 19th-century Martiño lighthouse.

Copa Mundial de Windsurf de Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura Windsurfing World Cup (Playa Barca) – since the mid-1980s, this event (a.k.a. PWA Grand Slam”) attracts the best of the best in the world of windsurfing. Participants are tested in the disciplines of speed, slalom and freestyle. The Meliá resort chain (which has a presence by this beach – the Meliá Gorriones resort), is one of the event’s main sponsors.

Playa Barca, where this event is held annually, is perfect for freeriding and freestyle windsurfing. On good days, the shorebreak allows a little aerial, and some ramps will make you fly when sailing out. Safe separation between wind and kitesurfers. This beach has the most consistent windy spot in Fuerteventura, due to thermal effect of the nearby hills.

Finca Canarias Aloe Vera

Finca Canarias Aloe Vera (Carretera General Fuerteventura FV-2 Km 42, 35620 La Fuentita) — over the years, Aloe Vera has been promoted internationally as a plant with healing properties and cosmetic uses (sun care, face care, body care, and hygiene).

This ecological plantation, located just 10 minutes from Gran Tarajal beach, is part of a successful Canarian company that grows the Aloe Vera plant for commercial production and export. 4,000 aloe vera plants are grown here, along with separate fields with 500 prickly cactus plants and 650 olive trees from organic farming cultivated as additional ingredients for the aloe vera products produced here. A free guided tour informs visitors of this and more about the history of this interesting plant (which can grow in arid climates like the Canary Islands). Cuevas de Ajuy:

Cuevas de Ajuy – these caves recall the Jurassic Park prehistoric movies, since this site goes back to that era (far before the Spanish conquest of this island. Among this site’s natural attractions are a 4 million year old fossilized beach (featuring sea floor sediments). Exploring this place is a captivating, almost mystical experience, as it lets the visitor watch the breaking sea under a structure of impressive basaltic rocks.
